Report: Shamrock Rovers defeated by Sligo Rovers before title lift

Shamrock Rovers hosted Sligo Rovers on Saturday evening after recently confirming their status as champions. The Hoops came into the fixture on the back of a 1-0 victory over Galway United and had nothing to play for in Saturday’s encounter.

With mammoth fixtures on the horizon for Stephen Bradley’s side in Athens and the Aviva Stadium, he opted to heavily rotate. Eight changes were made from the starting 11. Cian Barrett, John McGovern, and Aaron McEneff retained their place in the lineup from Wednesday’s victory.

Sligo Rovers arrived at Tallaght with everything to play for. John Russell’s side knew that a victory would ensure safety due to both Waterford FC and Galway United playing one another. Their supporters travelled in numbers to support their team in avoiding a promotion/relegation play-off with Bray Wanderers.

First half

Despite Rovers rotating their starting lineup, the opening half was evenly matched. Despite lacking a clear goal threat, the home side dominated possession. They registered eight shots, two more than Sligo Rovers, but only managed one on target.

Lee Steacy was handed his first start for the club since the 2-1 defeat to St. Patrick’s Athletic in April 2024. It appeared he was not going to last the full 90 minutes after he went down injured after six minutes. He managed to continue and saw out the full game as chants rang out from the South Stand, chanting “super Lee Steacy in goal”.

Aaron McEneff had the opportunity to net his first goal for the Hoops since May of this year, but Sam Sargeant saved his effort.

The first goal of the game came in the 37th minute when Ollie Denham headed home from close range. The meaning of this goal was clear to see as the away end celebrated knowing there was a good chance they would be safe.

Second half

Just seven minutes into the second half, Sligo Rovers were awarded a penalty. The penalty, conceded by Lee Grace, was converted by Owen Elding. It was Elding’s 12th league goal of the season, bringing his tally to 16 in all competitions.

10 minutes after the converted penalty was taken, Adam Matthews’ effort from outside the box halved their lead. No doubt this would cause some concerns for the opposition, who had been cruising for large parts.

As the game wore on, Bradley opted to give more minutes to those who are likely to feature next week. On 64 minutes, Roberto Lopes, Matt Healy, and Dylan Watts were all introduced for the Hoops. This move was possible to give some minutes ahead of a crucial week, with games against AEK Athens and Cork City in the FAI Cup Final. After 77 minutes, Daniel Grant replaced Graham Burke, his first appearance since the 4-1 defeat to Sparta Prague in October.

Sligo Rovers saw out a crucial victory against Rovers, a win that saw them stay in seventh place and ensure Premier Division status for 2026. As for the champions, all thoughts were on what took place after the final whistle, celebrating a 22nd title.

Key moments and performers

The key performer for Shamrock Rovers was Adam Matthews. The former Celtic defender netted from outside the box after 62 minutes. Matthews also made a big impact defensively for his side, making seven recoveries. His impact was positive in the 2-1 defeat despite being withdrawn two minutes after the goal.

Owen Elding made a good impact for the away side. The key performer for them, however, was centre back Patrick McClean. He made 12 clearances, five clearances, and two interceptions. McClean also recorded an 87% pass accuracy rate, nine of them in the Shamrock Rovers half.

Post-match reaction

John Russell hailed his Sligo Rovers side after the 2-1 victory over Shamrock Rovers. He described it as an “amazing night”, praising his squad. Russell was confident that the fixture between Waterford FC and Galway United would end level, and it did just that. He described the game as getting “nervy” in the last 25 minutes as Rovers began to introduce the “big guns”.

Stephen Bradley admitted to being “hurt” after last year’s final day drama as Shelbourne took the title out of their hands. He added that the squad have shown “incredible character” to come back and reclaim the title. The manager hinted at seeing two different sides when it comes to the clashes with AEK Athens and Cork City.

What it means and looking ahead

Shamrock Rovers enter one of the biggest weeks for them this year. A trip to Greece on Thursday to face AEK Athens in the UEFA Conference League. After this, it’s an FAI Cup Final showdown with Cork City in the Aviva Stadium. Supporters have called for Stephen Bradley to prioritise the cup. He has admitted in previous interviews that he believes the club can still qualify for the next phase of the competition. However, a defeat to AEK Athens would leave the Hoops all but knocked out with three games remaining.

For Sligo Rovers, the season has come to a close, and they will return in February 2026. They have ensured they will be in the Premier Division next season and have finished strongly. John Russell would have been quick to forget the FAI Cup defeat to Kerry FC, and the squad have shown a strong mentality to remain in the league for next season.
