Shamrock Rovers recently announced the signing of Enda Stevens after he had been training with the side for the past few weeks. His addition is highly anticipated after reports suggesting he was training with Stephen Bradley’s side surfaced two weeks ago. He will be part of the Rovers squad from January 2026, nearly 14 years on from his departure for Aston Villa.
The addition of Stevens for the new season adds to the speculation that Josh Honohan may be headed for the exit. He had offers from Lincoln City before the window closed in September that were turned down.
Full circle moment
Stevens’ move to Aston Villa was finalised during the summer window of 2011. However, Rovers had made the UEFA Europa League Group Stage, and his new club allowed him to join in January 2012. He got a taste for Premier League experience by remaining at the Hoops for a temporary period.
This move is emulating that Irish players can return to their native league in the latter stages of their career. Stevens joins a side that is regularly competing in European competition and has an outside chance of passing the League Phase of the UEFA Conference League.
In an interview posted on the club’s X account, Stevens said, “Being able to come back, you just see how good a place this is. The lads have been brilliant and so successful. I just want to be part of that.”
What Stevens brings to Bradley
Stevens has had an illustrious career in England, including making 192 appearances for Sheffield United. The latter stages of his career across the pond were affected by injuries. This led him to depart the Blades for Stoke City in 2023. During his two-year stay at the club, he made just 39 appearances. Five months after signing, he sustained an injury against Sheffield Wednesday that had him sidelined for three months.
The former Sheffield United full-back brings a wealth of experience that will definitely guide him throughout the season. Bradley also told the club that he will be a huge asset to youngsters such as Cory O’Sullivan and Igor Vassenin, both of whom play in the same position as Stevens.
He also has 26 caps for Ireland, making his debut in June 2018 in a friendly against the United States. Stevens will be determined to earn regular playing time as the Hoops will have another busy year.
Impact on the backline
Currently, the Hoops’ backline consists primarily of Daniel Grant, Roberto Lopes, Lee Grace, Daniel Cleary, and Josh Honohan. This backline has rarely been used of late due to injuries ruling certain players out. With the departure of Honohan looming large, there’s a sense of expectation that Stevens will replace him.
Already possessing an array of experience at the top level, Stevens will only add to that. His experience in Europe, England, and on the international stage should only boost Bradley’s confidence. The head coach is also targeting qualifying for the UEFA Europa League, something not done since Stevens was last at the club.
Expectation
The return of Enda Stevens has brought a lot of excitement via social media. The widespread reaction to the news is one of excitement and anticipation. The expectation around Stevens’ role on Bradley’s side would be one of a squad player. When qualifiers and cup games begin to coincide with league fixtures, it would be unlikely to see Stevens playing 180 minutes per week. He will still be determined to play a crucial role in helping this side qualify for Europe and retain their domestic double.
