Shamrock Rovers’ 2025 season has yet to reach its conclusion, and the following season is already lined up. The Hoops have one final outing against Hamrun Spartans on Thursday before a six-week break. Following recent disappointment, it has been confirmed that Rovers will not participate in UEFA Conference League football when the league resumes in February.

Stephen Bradley’s side will be disappointed after their early exit from Europe. However, qualifying for the competition itself was a monumental task that they achieved while competing on all fronts. Despite the squad not having a full pre-season for the 2026 season, they will have more opportunities to ease themselves into the new campaign. They begin the 2026 season on 31 January in the President’s Cup against Derry City. The following Friday (6 February), they begin their title defence against Dundalk in Tallaght Stadium.

Defining periods of the season

The 22-time champions’ first string of Dublin derbies arrives in April. The Hoops host Shelbourne (6 April), head to Inchicore to take on St. Patrick’s Athletic (10 April), and finally face Bohemians in Tallaght Stadium (17 April). That difficult patch does not conclude against The Gypsies as the double champions travel to Derry City on 24 April.

June will offer its own difficulties as Shamrock Rovers attempt to replicate the historical 2025 season. On 12 June, they head to Tolka Park and on 22 June, Rovers play host to Derry City. The latter fixture is scheduled for then as a result of both sides being in European action on the week that the Round 25 fixtures take place.

Shamrock Rovers’ defence of not only the league title but also the FAI Cup will offer additional incentive for opponents. The defence of the FAI Cup will begin on the weekend of 17 July. The same week, the double champions will be playing in the UEFA Champions League 1st qualifying round second leg tie.

Europe, cup, and disruption points

2025 was another example of the impact European football has on Irish clubs. Both Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne had league phase football in the UEFA Conference League and struggled. The differing calendar of Irish football compared to its European counterparts may have influenced results.

All Rovers, Derry City, Shelbourne and Bohemians will be in European competition from July onward. Derry City begin life in the UEFA Europa League, Shelbourne and Bohemians will be in the UEFA Conference League. These qualifier fixtures will impact league fixtures as they annually do. Shamrock Rovers and Derry City are guaranteed to have more than one round of fixtures due to starting above the third-tier competition.

The FAI Cup begins in July and has fixtures dotted across August, September, and October. This competition may take a backseat, depending on Stephen Bradley’s targets for this squad. After the cup final celebrations, Bradley mentioned targeting qualifying for the UEFA Europa League as a possible goal for next season.

Summer stretch

Across June, July, and August, the Hoops have seven league fixtures. They are due to come up against Shelbourne and Derry City on two occasions during this period. Rovers’ FAI Cup 2nd round tie will likely be played on Sunday due to European participation in the midweek. This happened this year when the Hoops faced Longford Town on the back of beating Ballkani 4-0.

Shamrock Rovers are scheduled to face Drogheda United on 31 July; this fixture will likely be played on the Sunday too. This is due to it being scheduled after the 2nd qualifying round second leg tie. Regardless of the result from the UEFA Champions League 1st qualifying round, they would drop into the UEFA Conference League 2nd qualifying round if it ended in defeat.

The run-in

As the Rovers’ campaign comes to a close, they face Bohemians, St. Patrick’s Athletic and Dundalk. These fixtures feature among the final seven league fixtures. They conclude their home campaign against Sligo Rovers, the same as the 2025 season. The only difference that occurs is that it is not the final round of fixtures. Rovers’ last game of the season is away to Dundalk.

Compared to fellow title contenders, they all conclude with similar difficulty levels. Derry City face Sligo Rovers away from home, and Shelbourne host Waterford on the final day. Clubs will be hopeful that they will be fulfilling European fixtures up to the end of the domestic season, as four clubs will feature across Europe.

Stephen Bradley and his side will be eager to embark on another historical campaign. On the back of the double success, the manager refuses to put a ceiling on the squad. The January transfer window will be a crucial period for the Hoops. The recent news suggesting Joshua Honohan will be departing for Lincoln City will leave a major hole within the squad that requires replacing.
