On Wednesday (7 January), it was announced by Shamrock Rovers that Seán Kavanagh would join the coaching staff for the year ahead. Kavanagh, who made just nine appearances in 2025, adds an array of experience to the dressing room in a senior capacity.

The former Fulham defender will be welcomed with open arms, as Rovers have recently lost their sporting director, Stephen McPhail. He joins the coaching staff with five league titles, two FAI Cup titles, and two President’s Cups to his name.

From player to the dugout

The 31-year-old joined the Hoops in 2018 after loan spells at both Mansfield Town and Hartlepool United. Since joining, Kavanagh has made 130 appearances and netted on five occasions. In what turned out to be his final appearance for Shamrock Rovers, he was introduced in the UEFA Conference League victory over Hamrun Spartans for the final 12 minutes.

When joining the club in 2018, he spoke of the ‘unbelievable’ pay cut he took to join the 22-time champions. He said: “The football here will suit me rather than trying to hang around the lower leagues in England, but we’ll see how it goes.”

Kavanagh is a player who has had an unfortunate bout with injuries throughout his playing career. The injuries, stemming back from his Fulham days, continued to hinder his minutes until the conclusion of 2025.

Familiar face for Stephen Bradley

Kavanagh made his debut in Stephen Bradley’s third season as manager of Shamrock Rovers. He made his debut on 23 February 2018 in a goalless draw against Dundalk in Tallaght Stadium. He began to embed himself into the squad in the following two games, coming away with two goals against Bray Wanderers and Derry City.

The manager told the club in an interview that coaching has been on the agenda for the left-back for some time. He said: “Seán has a very good opinion on the game and has always brought that to the dressing room and when we had our team meetings.”

What Kavanagh brings from the pitch

Kavanagh has just stepped away from the pitch, contemplating continuing on the pitch or taking to the sidelines. He has a wealth of experience in football, but particularly Rovers, as he has spent the previous seven years there. Having just stepped away from the dressing room in a playing capacity, he knows the dressing room well.

While his impact was minimal in claiming the double, it is something that Kavanagh played a role in. Impacted by injuries, Kavanagh did not have the impact he would have wanted. He told the club, “I’ve always watched the game and thought that I could coach at some stage. But with not having played as many games as I would’ve liked over the last few years, it possibly was a factor in that. But I was given the opportunity to coach, and I decided to go for it.”

Rovers continue 2026 preparations

As the 2026 season fast approaches, the latest coaching appointment is the latest step in preparations. Kavanagh, who is likely replacing McPhail, has provided an in-house solution for the woe. Thus, it allows the club to focus on reinforcements in the January transfer window with a clearer vision.

The club has already agreed a deal with St. Patrick’s Athletic winger, Jake Mulraney. He is expected to arrive on a two-year deal and will bolster the Hoops’ attacking options for 2026.
