Saturday evening sees Shamrock Rovers and Derry City lock horns for the President’s Cup. Both captains, Roberto Lopes and Dipo Akinyemi, met Catherine Connolly, Ireland’s president, earlier in the week. Neither side of the fixture will be overtly distraught should they be defeated, but neither camp will want to leave empty-handed.

Derry City are part of the inaugural event due to finishing second in the league table last season. Shamrock Rovers claimed all the silverware available to them domestically, meaning that the President’s Cup fixture was fulfilled by the runners-up. The home side will be hopeful of adding this trophy to their collection, making it their third piece of silverware since November.

Why this fixture matters

The President’s Cup offers both sides a competitive fixture ahead of the 2026 league campaign that gets underway next Friday. Both sides have participated in their respective friendlies, but this fixture offers a more competitive encounter. With a trophy on the line, it will drive the incentive for both sides wanting to bring it home and claim bragging rights slightly early.

Both teams have had an array of signings, with Derry City having the upper hand in that department. However, this fixture allows both sides to embed new signings and give them a taste of meaningful fixtures for their new club. Shamrock Rovers’ latest signing was confirmed yesterday, Adam Brennan arriving from University College Dublin (UCD). This means it will likely be too late for him to feature, but he may be watching from the stands inside Tallaght Stadium.

shamrock rovers’ familiar rivals

These two sides are overly familiar with each other at this stage, meeting at least four times a year (aside from the 2020 season). Shamrock Rovers and Derry City met as late as October 2025 at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium. The Hoops, who were on a downward slope domestically, were beaten 2-1. It was one of numerous fixtures where they had to just avoid defeat to confirm their 22nd title. That did not come until three days later when they beat Galway United 1-0 via a free-kick from Dylan Watts.

That October victory for the Candystripes was their first in the last 10 attempts, the previous win coming in March 2023. These two met in the 2023 President’s Cup when Stephen Bradley’s side were defeated 2-0 on the night.

Early clues rather than conclusions

Regardless of the direction the trophy heads in, this fixture offers early clues over conclusions. Stephen Bradley’s new signings will get an opportunity to impress and see how they fit into their new roles. The likes of Jake Mulraney, Enda Stevens, and others will begin to see how they adjust to different tasks asked of the Rovers boss.

Derry City have brought in seven new players, and their business may not be done. They have recently been linked with former Shamrock Rovers player, Barry Cotter. Their supporters will be highly anticipating James McClean above all else. He is expected to make his debut in Tallaght Stadium against Shamrock Rovers. McClean has already spoken of the type of reception he is expecting from rival supporters, with Saturday being the first taste of it.

What Derry City bring

Aside from numerous signings, Derry City will be eager to stamp their authority on the new season. They are a club that is known to be in the title race but misses what’s required to get it over the line. Tiernan Lynch will be hopeful that these latest recruits will provide that missing element. The last time they won the league was in the 1996/97 season, where they finished 10 points above Bohemians.

Should they get the edge over Shamrock Rovers, it will provide early belief that this could be their year. The season is long and decided over 36 games, but beating the double champions would give an early insight into where Derry City is at.

Defining the night

Early insight is the key element that will be provided in this President’s Cup fixture. While a victory for the away side may give early excitement, supporters should not get carried away. The Hoops will look to continue their winning ways. Their latest victory was the 3-1 win over Hamrun Spartans last month.

The President’s Cup is an event that neither side will want to be on the losing side of. With Catherine Connolly expected to be in attendance, both Shamrock Rovers and Derry City will want to claim silverware.

Starting point

Stephen Bradley recently spoke at the launch of the League of Ireland. In an interview, he admitted the aim was to retain the double, but time will tell if that is achievable. Supporters have had doubts over the lack of recruitment, particularly with the departure of Josh Honohan. The recent news of TSG Hoffenheim agreeing a fee with Shamrock Rovers for Michael Noonan has also added to supporter concerns.

Adam Brennan’s arrival provides excitement for the fanbase, but there is an overwhelming feeling that more is needed. Saturday’s fixture will provide an insight into where Shamrock Rovers are in terms of organisation.
