Shamrock Rovers have announced the signing of Tunmise Sobowale from St. Mirren on Friday afternoon. The 26-year-old was confirmed two days before the shutdown of the League of Ireland transfer window. He is expected to occupy one of the wing-back positions or the back three.

Sobowale could be seen as a replacement for the recently departed Josh Honohan, who left for Lincoln City last month. He will not be featuring in the Dublin derby against St. Patrick’s Athletic tonight, but could get minutes in Monday’s clash with Dundalk. The manager, Stephen Bradley, already spoke of how he is “ready to go” as he recently played reserve games for St. Mirren.

Returning to the League of Ireland

Sobowale is not unfamiliar with the League of Ireland, already having spells with Waterford FC, Finn Harps, and Athlone Town. He has made 89 appearances for the three clubs combined and has since earned valuable experience in the United Kingdom. After three years at the RSC Stadium, Sobowale departed for Shrewsbury Town, making 33 appearances in one season. He went on to play for Swindon Town and St. Mirren, making a further 49 senior appearances.

These experiences will provide the defender with an array of experiences as he returns to Ireland, this time representing the double champions. With experience at such a level, Stephen Bradley hopes he can fit in seamlessly, particularly with the upcoming European challenges that arrive in the summer months. At the same time, the club will be dealing with the departure of captain, Roberto Lopes, as he represents Cape Verde at the FIFA World Cup.

What he brings to Shamrock Rovers

Shamrock Rovers enter 2026 defending both the League of Ireland Premier Division and the FAI Cup. A successful 2025 means that the bar of expectations will continue to rise. How the Hoops deal with both defending their crowns and trying to qualify for Europe again appears to be a monumental task. Signings such as Sobowale will aim to aid this squad as they attempt to take it on.

The defensive line is ageing at the Dublin 24 club, and the latest arrival helps lower that average age. Enda Stevens arrived last month at 35 years of age. While his previous stint at Rovers and the ones earned since could be key, he is not a futuristic addition. Sobowale could be key to navigating the balance between experience and age.

Timing and squad context

The transfer window shuts on Sunday, and it would appear this could be the final piece of transfer activity for Stephen Bradley’s side. Sobowale is the fourth signing Shamrock Rovers have made since the conclusion of 2025. Supporter calls for signings in defence were answered with this one; questions remain in other departments.

Up front, Rory Gaffney remains out with an injury. He is expected back soon, but similar to Aaron Greene, they are both 36. With the likely departure of Michael Noonan this summer, it continues to limit Rovers’ attacking prowess. Graham Burke tends to fill one of the front two positions when available, but doubts remain within.

What does it mean to move forward

Shamrock Rovers latest signing will not feature in Friday’s derby with Stephen Kenny’s side as previously mentioned. He could be in line to get minutes next week. Monday sees Rovers host Dundalk in what was meant to be the opening day fixture before being postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Just four days later, there is a meeting with Bohemians at Dalymount Park, so supporters can expect to see Sobowale in the near future.
